Production Methods

Description

Instructor

Tim McKeown

Introduction of common materials and methods used to manufacture products. Identification of alternative processes, materials, finishing methods, relative costs, applicability to design and effect on design of products will be explored.

There will also be an introduction to aspects of supply chain and sourcing as it relates to the design process.

A project will be completed by students that will analyze the materials and process used to manufacture a specific product. Students will also complete a project/report exploring new materials or process applications as it relates to product design.

Format & Grading

Classes are conducted as lectures, discussions,
reading assignments, product design case
studies and show and tell class assignments.
Emphasis is placed on understanding
production methods and materials in the context
of design. Part of the class time will be spent on
discussing the students' projects as required.

In class performance 30%
Product Analysis Project 50%
Materials / Process Report 20%
