Applied Design Research
Description
Welcome everyone! This year, the focus of the Intersession Applied Design Research Intersession is Creating Research Plans. The goal for the week is to gain understanding and experience in research planning. We’ll target the upfront phase of an ethnographic-based exploration, diving into the details of developing an initial hypothesis, deciding who and what to study, what methods to use, and writing a research protocol.
What will the week be like?
This class marries theory with practice. Throughout the week, we’ll be working on a real-world project. We’ll introduce the project topic and form teams on Monday. Together, we’ll work to develop a research plan to meet our “client’s” business goals. Along the way, you minds will be constantly challenged, your bodies will be fully engaged, and empathy for real people and their needs will be discovered.
What should I expect?
The week will feel more like an intensive workshop than a class lecture. We’ll constantly toggle between Methods Training, Action Learning exercises and our Project Work. Altogether the week promises to be an engaging, demanding, stimulating, intense, and fun introduction to the methods and practices for improving our research.
