Design Synthesis
Description
Design Synthesis introduces methods and tools for forming, developing, and managing ideas. There will be discussions on models and factors that contribute to or detract from innovative thinking. A series of synthesis methods will be tried in the class to generate concepts from observations and analyses. We will explore methods to support both individual and group synthesis. Methods that fall into the following categories are given focused attention: generative thinking, framing solution space, exploring ideas, organizing ideas, evaluating ideas, and systemizing ideas.
The goals are:
~ Understand clearly how to adapt a generic synthetic process to your discipline.
~ Incorporate your point of view as you apply this process to your projects.
~ Gain exposure to a toolkit of synthesis methods - and create new ones.
~ Leverage these methods and skills in other course work.
~ Be able to articulate your synthesis skills and processes to get a great job.
Format & Grading
Classes consist of presentations, discussions, demos, and work-sessions. Active participation in these interactive sessions to experience and demonstrate different methods is highly recommended. Emphasis is placed on understanding synthesis methods by applying them to illustrative situations or projects.
One third of the grade will be based on in-class performance, particularly on attendance and contribution. The other two-thirds will be based on the student's contribution to the project. For this, the emphasis will be on the innovative application of principles, the quality of resultant concepts, and the impact of your presentation. Evaluation of project contribution will also include reviews by teammates.
