Advanced Portfolio Planning
Description
What’s next? Today’s companies are faced with managing their scare resources to deliver ever
more compelling products faster than their competition while generating greater profits. Portfolio planning is essentially how to generate and choose from a number of options to optimize a company’s investment against these and other strategic goals.
This course builds on the introduction course in both methods and depth of topics covered. We
will explore how portfolio planning can enlighten strategic decisions as well as provide tactical
direction to individual offerings. You will learn advanced techniques for product and portfolio
planning with a focus on competitive assessment and strategic scenarios.
Format & Grading
Classes are conducted as lectures and discussions based on the readings and homework. Emphasis is placed on application of methods to real world situations. Periodically, classes will have breakout sessions for simple exercises that will be reviewed in class. Depending on class size, the entire class will work collaboratively on a single portfolio plan for a chosen company.
Grading is based on the following:
1) Attendance, contribution to class discussions
2) Completed homework for use in class
2) In-class breakouts
3) Submitted class/group portfolio plan
