Communication Workshop: Data Visualization
Description
This workshop will primarily focus on ways in which information is visualized using diagrams. Fundamentals of diagrammatic representations will be discussed in the early part of the course. Principles of good diagramming will be discussed using many illustrations. The use of static, interactive, and dynamic visualizations in different user contexts will be analyzed. The workshop provides a platform for discussion on the principles of visualization based on user needs, the context of use, and the purpose. Students will explore interactive capabilities in visualization systems that processes multi-dimensional information. Student teams will conduct in-depth research on a selected topic area and conceive an easy-to-use visualization system to help analyze, understand, construct, or communicate complex information. The teams will work on concept prototypes, test them with potential users, and demonstrate the power of a visualization system in the form of a software prototype or application.
Format & Grading
Each week the workshop will focus on understanding and applying good visualization principles for the purpose of analyzing and communicating complex information. There will be topic-of-the-day discussions and project planning meetings at the beginning of each class. During the later part of each class student teams will work on their project and share their progress. Student teams will also continuously collect great examples of visualizations, share them with the class and document them in shared spaces for reference. There will also be discussion on the reading materials at times. Students are expected to take a proactive role in defining their work plan and activities throughout the semester. Active participation is expected, both operationally and intellectually.
One third of the grade will be based on in-class performance, particularly on attendance and contribution. The other two-third will be based on the student's contribution to the project. For this, the emphasis will be on innovative application of principles, quality of resultant concepts, and the impact of your presentation. Project contribution evaluation will include reviews by team mates.
