Cardiac Cath Lab: IT User Experience & Information Flow (Fall 2007)

Abstract

The project focuses on cardiac catheterization workflow, IT reporting and hospital information flows in relation to the complexity and high-cost of cardiac care on a patient case basis. Information technologies are critical for ‘cath labs’ and hospitals for patient-specific medical results and multiple clinical and administrative purposes including cost-capture. In this way, the Cath Lab design research instantiates how ‘[t]he results that matter are patient outcomes per unit of cost at the medical condition level’ (Porter & Teisberg, Redefining Health Care, 2006, pp. 6-7). This initial design research highlights the many communicative acts it takes to carry out complex clinical care and create accurate data at the point of origin for many points of use.
