The Department of Art and Design is devoted to the practice, the history, and the theory of the visual arts and design. The department is comprised of three primary divisions: Design Studies, Fine Arts, and the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture (HADVC).

The Design Studies program focuses on two disciplines within the field of design: industrial design and visual communication design.

The Industrial Design  program emphasizes design research, analysis, problem identification, concept development, functional requirements, technology, human factors, aesthetics, and social responsibility to produce solutions that meet the needs of the user according to a broad frame of reference.

The Visual Communication Design program is focused in the use of words, symbols, and images to communicate complex ideas and information. Its program is focused on curating information for the purpose of instruction and education – not consumer advertising.
