Anijo Punnen Mathew has been appointed as the first academic director of the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship. The Institute was founded to nurture the advancement of critical and creative ideas, foster interdisciplinary and external collaboration, and create a culture that enables innovation and tech entrepreneurship to flourish.

Anijo is a tenured associate professor at the Institute of Design, where his research looks at evaluating new semantic appropriations of urban spaces as enabled by technology and media convergence. He is also founder and chief experience officer of Vamonde, a Chicago startup and storytelling app.

As director, Anijo will help highlight and empower innovation and entrepreneurship across Illinois Institute of Technology. He plans to do this by taking a multidisciplinary approach and aiming spotlights on innovative faculty and student projects and ideas that are transformational and disruptive in nature.
