This academic year, IIT Institute of Design will move from its Chicago Loop location to the new Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship building on Illinois Institute of Technology’s main (‘Mies’) campus in Chicago’s South Loop. The new building, scheduled to open in mid October 2018, is only a few miles from our current location in Chicago’s commerce hub and is close to the South and West Loop, two up-and-coming centers for innovation in Chicago.

A custom new home for ID

The Kaplan Building has been designed from the beginning to support the Institute of Design, the core tennant. The school will have more space—a combination of individual-focused space, team-based space, and open-studio—in a visually compelling environment created with the needs of advanced designers in mind. “The design for the Kaplan Institute is a thoughtful and sensitive contribution to Illinois Tech’s important architectural legacy yet is forward looking in its approach to the flexible and technologically advanced learning facilities needed today,” says John Ronan, Illinois Tech professor of architecture and architect for the project.

Being on the main campus will enable the ID community to participate more actively with the broader Illinois Tech community of architects, technologists, and entrepreneurs, reflecting our investment in integrating with other fields in our practice as designers. ID will share the university’s Idea Shop, the IPRO Program, the Jules F. Knapp Entrepreneurship Center, and the Kaplan Family Institute.

Public transportation, as well as university shuttle buses connecting the main campus to Chicago’s Loop, will enable easy, safe access to all Chicago has to offer.
